The month of October is Mental Health Month for NSW. Across NSW mental health promotion and campaigns aimed at raising mental health awareness are held throughout the month, including World Mental Health Day which takes place each year on October 10.

This year Wayahead Mental Health Association announced the theme for Mental Health Month 2015 as Value Your Mind. The main message is to encourage everyone to make mental health a priority and to think about how mental health exists in our everyday lives. This is such an important message and useful reminder about how mental health affects our lives and the lives of the people around us.

As part of Mental Health Month Kookaburra Kids CEO Pam Brown alongside the St George and Sutherland Mental Health Interagency organised the Healthy Minds and Wellbeing Expo held today at Sutherland Hospital.

A free event, all were welcome to come along and learn how to achieve a healthy mind, practice self-care and maintain a balanced wellbeing. It also provided an opportunity for the community to connect to mental health and wellbeing services available in the region.

There was lots of great stalls on mental health, free giveaways, laughter therapy, art exhibitions, entertainment and a BBQ lunch. Kookaburra Kids CEO Pam did a great job as MC and some of the Kookaburra Kids team provided free arts and crafts for the kids, alongside an amazing balloon artist – the balloon jet packs were a hit!

Such a fun event! It was wonderful to see the community coming together to promote mental health and help people achieve personal wellbeing. We can’t wait for next year!

Thanks to everyone that came along! If you missed out on this event as we mentioned above events for Mental Health Month are held throughout the month of October, click here to find a Mental Health Month event near you.
