Isabel joined the Kookaburra Kids program when she was 8 years old. Her dad has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and is sometimes hospitalised for treatment and is away from the family home for extended periods of time.
“It makes me feel sad when dad is in hospital and I miss him, but I know that it helps him get better. Sometimes he is there for a long time. The last time was the day before my 9th birthday; we went to see Dad in the hospital, it was a bit scary.” Isabel*
Kookaburra Kids camp is a weekend away where Isabel can be herself, have fun, and learn more about her dad’s mental illness, and access support and talk about how she feels.
When asked about Kookaburra Kids, Isabel said, “I love meeting new friends in my cabin and learning about the other kids’ families…I also love going canoeing.”
