Celebrating Young Carers this Carers Week
Every October, Carers Week celebrates the 2.65 million Australians who provide care and support to someone living with mental illness, disability, chronic illness or ageing.
Among them are young carers; incredible kids and teens who step up to care for parents, siblings or other family members, often without anyone even realising they’re carers.
They’re cooking meals, helping with appointments, managing daily routines, and offering emotional support. All while juggling school, friendships and their own wellbeing.
This ABC 7.30 Report story, The incredible reality for young carers, shines a light on their courage and the realities they face every day.
How Kookaburra Kids supports young carers
At Kookaburra Kids, we support young people aged 8–18 who are living in families impacted by mental illness, and that includes many young carers.
Through our Young Carers program, supported by Wellways Carer Gateway, we bring together kids who share similar experiences to help them understand they’re not alone. Our programs combine mental health education with fun, recreational activities that give young carers the chance to take a break, connect with others, and learn practical skills that support their mental health and wellbeing.
What our Young Carers program offers
- Camps and Activity Days where young carers can just be kids; having fun, building friendships, and making memories in a supportive environment.
- Connect sessions that mix games, conversation and education about mental health and help-seeking.
- Confidence-building and peer connection, helping kids strengthen coping skills and know where to get help when they need it.
Everything we do aims to build three key skills that safeguard long-term mental health: mental health literacy, peer connection and help-seeking behaviours.
Why this matters
Young carers often miss out on social opportunities and can experience higher stress and isolation. By connecting them with others who understand and by giving them tools to support their own wellbeing, we help them build confidence and resilience for the future.
At Kookaburra Kids, we believe every young carer deserves to feel seen, supported and celebrated. Not just during Carers Week, but all year round.
