Young Carers Create and Connect
In May, we ran our first Young Carers Create and Connect session at the Cairns Carers Hub, the beginning of a 4-week pilot designed to help young carers reconnect after attending our most recent Cairns Young Carers Camp.
For many young carers impacted by family mental illness, opportunities to stay connected with peers who understand their experiences can make a meaningful difference. These sessions create a fun, welcoming and low-pressure space to continue building friendships, unwind after school and access additional support.
Across the program, young carers have the opportunity to:
๐ Reconnect with friends from camp
๐ค Meet other young carers in their community
๐ฟ Relax and recharge after school
๐จ Take part in creative and calming activities
๐ Learn more about available Carer Gateway supports
๐ฌ Connect with a coaching facilitator and explore ongoing coaching opportunities
Our first session included arts and crafts, board games, Nintendo Switch, quiet reading spaces, access to a sensory room with calming tools and plenty of time to simply chat and connect.
Staff from Wellways and Kookaburra Kids volunteers were there throughout the afternoon helping create a safe, supportive and welcoming environment.
The feedback so far has been incredibly positive, with young carers already looking forward to the next sessions.
A big thank you to everyone involved in helping create spaces where young carers feel seen and supported, especially our program partner, Wellways Australia.
