Partnership Success: What We Achieved Through Our Collaboration with The Big Sister Foundation
Since our partnership with the Big Sister Foundation began in 2019, we have made significant strides in advancing research efforts and enhancing the impact of Kookaburra Kids programs. This six-year collaboration has not only contributed to the growth of our programs but has also empowered young people impacted by family mental illness. Here are some of the most notable achievements and research outcomes we’ve achieved together:
Impactful Research Outputs
The partnership with the Big Sister Foundation enabled us to develop a comprehensive and rigorous research program, generating critical insights that have greatly enhanced our understanding of what works for young people living in families affected by mental ill-health. These research efforts have led to a better understanding of the needs of our participants and helped us fine-tune our programs for maximum impact.
Key Research Outcomes:
2 Conference Presentations
3 Journal Publications
1 Publication Award
2 Strategic White Papers
2 Public Submissions
These outputs have allowed us to share our findings with the broader mental health and youth service sectors, contributing to the growing body of knowledge about how to support children and young people in similar situations.
Strong Participant Feedback
We are proud to report that the data collected from over 500 young people across Australia showed overwhelmingly positive results. Feedback from participants revealed that 94% rated Kookaburra Kids programs as “good” or “great,” highlighting the relevance and impact of our initiatives.
Additionally, parent support for future program engagement was overwhelmingly positive, with 96% of parents indicating their endorsement for continued participation.

Empowering Community Capabilities
This partnership has been pivotal in sharing research knowledge and expertise with the broader Big Sister network, enabling a ripple effect of improvement in program delivery and evaluation. By building community capabilities, we have ensured that the benefits of this collaboration will continue to shape and improve the future of our programs.
Life-Enhancing Change
The most significant outcome of this partnership is the life-changing impact we’ve had on young people. Our research has shown that:
8 out of 10 young people found social connections through our programs.
6 out of 10 young people experienced positive changes in their help-seeking behaviours.
8 out of 10 young people reported increased pride and confidence as a result of participating in Kookaburra Kids programs.
In addition, follow-up feedback from both young people and parents has provided valuable insights into the longer-term changes that have had life-enhancing benefits for participants.
Looking to the Future
The ongoing feedback loops and collaborative efforts in research have strengthened our commitment to delivering programs that meet the evolving needs of young people impacted by family mental illness. With the knowledge gained through this partnership, we are confident that we can continue to improve and expand our offerings, making a meaningful difference in the lives of more young people across Australia.
We are incredibly grateful for the partnership with the Big Sister Foundation and excited to see how the research outcomes continue to shape the future of Kookaburra Kids. Together, we are creating lasting change and empowering the next generation to thrive.
