Songs that celebrate our volunteers
For National Volunteer Week, we asked our Kookaburra Kids community a simple question:
What song reminds you of volunteering, connection, resilience, community, camp memories, or Kookaburra Kids?
The answers became something really special.
From airport memories after camp, to songs that bring back the happy tired feeling of a final reflection video, to tracks about friendship, self acceptance, grief, courage and belonging, our community playlist captures so much of what makes Kookaburra Kids volunteers extraordinary.
Volunteering with Kookaburra Kids is not just about showing up for an activity or a weekend away. It is about creating moments where young people feel seen, supported and less alone. It is about helping them build friendships, try something new, laugh until it hurts, dance badly, talk honestly, and remember that they do not have to carry everything by themselves.
And, as it turns out, there is a song for almost every part of that experience.
One volunteer chose Young Queen by Mimoza, remembering hearing it for the first time at Townsville Airport after a Magnetic Island camp. For them, the song speaks to seeing the potential in every young person, no matter their background, and the pride that comes from helping young people connect with new friends.
Others chose songs that speak directly to resilience and self belief. Unstoppable by Sia, I’m Still Standing by Elton John, High Hopes by Panic! At The Disco and The Middle by Jimmy Eat World all appeared as reminders that people can keep going, even when things are hard. These songs carry messages of confidence, perseverance and self acceptance, ideas that sit at the heart of the supportive environment Kookaburra Kids creates.
Some songs were chosen because they feel like community. Count On Me by Bruno Mars, I’ll Be There For You by The Rembrandts, We Got Love by Jessica Mauboy and Life Is A Highway by Rascal Flatts all reflect friendship, trust, belonging and the feeling of finding your people.
For many volunteers and staff, camp memories were woven through their choices. One person shared Green Green Grass by George Ezra, which was used in the final reflection video of their first Kookaburra Kids camp. The song now brings back the happy, tired, full hearted feeling of the end of camp, when you can see how much the young people have grown over just a few days.
Another response remembered a group of young people joyfully dancing to Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs during a summer camp, bursting into laughter as they used the stop sign motion while crossing roads on the way to surfing. It is a small moment, but exactly the kind of memory that stays with people.
There were songs about grief and healing too, including Bronte by Gotye and Savoir aimer by Florent Pagny. These choices remind us that resilience is not always loud or upbeat. Sometimes it is quiet. Sometimes it is about acceptance, care, patience and being around others who understand.
And of course, some songs were chosen simply because they make people want to move. Santé by Stromae, Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine and many others bring energy, hope and joy to the playlist. They remind us that even after difficult times, brighter moments can still find their way back in.
Together, these songs tell a story of the Kookaburra Kids volunteer community. A story of kindness, courage, laughter, connection and care.
To every volunteer who gives their time, energy and heart to support young people living in families impacted by mental illness, thank you. You help create the memories, friendships and moments of confidence that young people carry with them long after camp, activity days or online sessions end.
This playlist is for you.

The full list of songs chosen by our volunteers:
| Name | Song | Reason |
| Cal E | Mimoza – Young Queen | Literally heard it for the first time at Townsville Airport after the Magnetic Island camp last December! It speaks to how we should treat people, regardless of who they are or what background they come from. And I suppose that’s what I love about youth work and volunteering: every young person is a unique person with unlimited potential, and if met halfway by caring adults who see them for who they really are, who knows where their limit ends! I feel proud after doing camps and activity days. Knowing that I’m helping connect young people with new friends is what makes it all worthwhile. And music and dance…can’t go wrong, can you!? |
| Gianpaolo S | Life Can Be – Michael Lee Brown | This song to me is about living your life to the fullest. Everything around you is beautiful, whether it’s sharing memories or passing on your experiences in life for fulfillment. For me, hearing stories of leaders and volunteers growing up with the kids on Kookaburra Kids feels special. It forms a sense of belonging to a community and connection we all unknowingly seek. |
| Stop Me If I’ve Told You This Story – Maddie Jay | This song to me is about trying new things to find what makes you happy in life. In recent years I have been craving new experiences in my life. Volunteering does just that. You get to visit new places; meet new people; teach, help and learn from others things you wouldn’t go out of your own way to do usually. | |
| Bronte – Gotye | This song to me is an emotional one. Everyone needs to grieve when something sad happens in life. This is what makes us human. For me, playing this song on repeat helps me come to terms with what’s happening around me and helps me to think about all the memories I had shared. The hardest part to get out of this rut is acceptance and sometimes being around others who share a similar experience is something truly amazing that Kookaburra Kids strives to help with. | |
| I Don’t Want To! – Min Taka | This song to me is a fun catching song all about your mind and inner thoughts stopping you from doing things. You would rather do the same old boring thing than try something new. I find it really hard to break the norms of a normal routine and try something different. This is a good reminder to people who have these issues to fight it. Who cares if you make a fool of yourself. | |
| Emerald – Grégoire Jokic | This is a food for thought song of emotion going through a journey almost like you are watching a movie without words. | |
| Additional | Zombie – YUNGBLUD Revelation – Flawed Mangoes Here In Spirit – Jim James For You – Tracy Chapman voor alles bang (afraid of everything) – Sef + Wende Haven’t You Heard – Arab Strap Hard To Love – Mini Trees Zohra – Arnaud Rebotini | |
| Carolyn M | I’ll be there for you – The Rembrandts | No reason given |
| Count on Me – Bruno Mars | No reason given | |
| Fireworks and Roar – Katy Perry | No reason given | |
| Amanda C | Unstoppable – Sia | My song that reminds me of resilience is Sia’s Unstoppable. I personally hear it as empowerment and a song about resilience and self-confidence. The lyrics can relate to so many people affected by family mental health. Having personally grown up with an older sibling with severe mental health issues in the UK and zero support offered to siblings impacted, this song resonates with my journey – knowing I can focus on what I want to achieve being ‘Unstoppable’. |
| Unknown | Maps – Yeah Yeah Yeahs | Spending a summer camp with a fantastic group of young girls doing the ‘viral’ TikTok moves to this classic song. Them breaking into gleeful, hysterical laughter as they used the stop sign motion when crossing roads to go surfing. |
| Monica L | Green Green Grass, the sped up version by George Ezra | This song was used as background music for the final video reflection of my first Kookaburra Kids camp. I had not heard the song before and it just puts a smile on my face as I remember that happy but tired vibe at the end of camp, seeing how the young people have grown over the weekend. |
| Harrison BP | Thank You for the Music – ABBA | I chose the ABBA song as it represents the reason I believe volunteering with children is so important. This song reminds me of all the incredible mentors I had when I was younger and what drives me to give back to children who are facing any sort of disadvantage. |
| Dedicated To The One I Love – The Mamas & The Papas | I chose Dedicated To The One I Love as it reminds me of every time I have seen a child on a program smile and be grateful for the opportunity they have been given to connect with other children and enjoy the moment. | |
| We Got Love – Jessica Mauboy | I chose We Got Love as it speaks to the community of leaders I have met whilst volunteering with Kookaburra Kids and the feeling of community I have felt from each and every one of them. Together, we provide an opportunity for these children to alter their mindsets and set them up with tools that will set them up for success in the future. | |
| Unknown | Savoir aimer – Florent Pagny | This song is about selflessness – learning how to smile, love, wait and live without expecting anything in return. It’s also about learning how to bounce back after obstacles and this is what our volunteers are constantly doing – rising from the challenges in their personal lives and coming to our camps without expecting anything in return. It’s a great song I’ve not listened to in ages and just love. |
| Joe M | Nirvana – Come As You Are | I think it’s the perfect song for how it feels to be open to others who may be vulnerable or misunderstood and let them know they can be themselves. |
| Brittany S | I’m Still Standing – Elton John or Taron Egerton | I’m still standing – song of perseverance. |
| Life Is A Highway – Rascal Flatts | Life is a highway – this song has a special meaning to my family and I. Moving interstate on my own, Kookaburra Kids volunteers, young people, organisation and values have been like a family for me and a place I feel I belong. | |
| Unknown | All My Friends – LCD Soundsystem | A song reminiscing about the good times you’ve had with friends past. It talks about some “messy” nights, but the memories are still fond. |
| JM | High Hopes – Panic! At The Disco | It doesn’t matter what life throws at you, what your interests are, or whether they are what the popular group believes in. It is fine to be different from others. Being an individual is important, and you should chase your dreams regardless of what they are. |
| Shaz P | The Middle – Jimmy Eat World | This song has always felt like a reminder that you’re enough as you are. Its message about self-acceptance, resilience, and not needing to have everything figured out really connects to the supportive and encouraging environment we try to create for young people and each other at Kookaburra Kids. |
| Santé – Stromae | This song feels like a celebration of the people who quietly support and care for others behind the scenes. The lyrics and energy always make me think of the kindness, generosity, and community spirit volunteers bring to Kookaburra Kids. It also has a beat that’s impossible not to dance to. | |
| Dog Days Are Over – Florence + The Machine | I love the feeling of hope and release in this song — it reminds me that even after difficult moments, joy, connection, and brighter days can still find their way back to us. The energy feels uplifting, freeing, and full of resilience, which feels really connected to the spirit of Kookaburra Kids and the experiences our young people and volunteers share together. | |
| Naomi H | Count On Me – Bruno Mars | Because this song encompasses trust, companionship, friendship, positivity and support – which every single one of our incredible volunteers embodies <3 |
